Generic Actigall ( Ursodeoxycholic acid )
Actigall: Uses, Dosage, Safety, and Prescription Information
Actigall is the brand name for ursodiol, a prescription bile acid medicine. It may be used to dissolve selected radiolucent cholesterol gallstones in people who are not suitable for gallbladder surgery, to prevent gallstones during rapid weight loss, and in specified ursodiol products for primary biliary cholangitis. It is not a treatment for every type of gallstone or every biliary condition. Imaging, laboratory evaluation, symptoms, and the reason surgery is unsuitable must guide the decision.
An Actigall price can differ by capsule strength, pharmacy, insurance coverage, and generic ursodiol availability. Patients may buy Actigall only with a valid prescription from a licensed pharmacy. An Actigall price comparison should never lead to an unreviewed product substitution, dose change, or delay in treatment for severe abdominal symptoms.
Indications
For gallstone dissolution, ursodiol is used for appropriate noncalcified cholesterol stones in a functioning gallbladder. It may require months of treatment, complete dissolution does not occur in every patient, and stones can recur after successful therapy. It is not suitable for calcified stones, bile-pigment stones, biliary obstruction, cholangitis, gallstone pancreatitis, or a patient who needs urgent cholecystectomy. Severe or persistent right-upper-abdominal pain, fever, jaundice, vomiting, or dark urine requires prompt medical assessment.
Actigall may also be prescribed to prevent stones during rapid weight loss. Patients can buy Actigall after the clinician has confirmed the indication and supplied a treatment plan. The Actigall price is secondary to follow-up imaging and laboratory monitoring when required.
Dosage
Dose is based on indication and body weight. For radiolucent gallstone dissolution, labeling commonly uses 8 to 10 mg/kg/day divided into two or three doses. During rapid weight loss, labeling commonly uses 600 mg daily as 300 mg twice daily. Actigall capsules are commonly supplied as 300 mg. Other ursodiol products may have different strengths and regimens, including weight-based dosing for primary biliary cholangitis. Take the medicine consistently as prescribed and do not change the schedule independently.
Patients with a valid prescription can buy Actigall 300 mg when that strength matches the prescribed regimen. Take missed doses when remembered unless it is nearly time for the next dose; do not take extra capsules. Ultrasound monitoring may be needed at intervals during gallstone-dissolution therapy. Lack of partial dissolution after a prolonged trial can change the likelihood of success, so keep scheduled imaging appointments.
Before patients buy Actigall for a refill, they should confirm that continued therapy and the planned monitoring remain appropriate. Keep capsules in a tightly closed container at room temperature and out of reach of children.
Safety Information
Do not use Actigall in people with hypersensitivity to ursodiol or a product ingredient. It does not relieve an acute gallbladder attack and is not appropriate in complete biliary obstruction. Tell the prescriber about liver, pancreas, or bile-duct disease, prior gallbladder surgery, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and every current medicine. Common effects can include diarrhea, nausea, abdominal discomfort, dizziness, back pain, cough, or hair thinning.
Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, fever, jaundice, repeated vomiting, rash with facial swelling, breathing difficulty, fainting, or signs of infection. These symptoms may reflect gallbladder or bile-duct complications rather than a routine medicine effect. Do not drive or use machinery if dizziness affects alertness. The prescriber may monitor liver tests depending on the indication and individual clinical situation.
Interactions
Aluminum-containing antacids, cholestyramine, and colestipol can reduce ursodiol absorption and may need separated administration or a different plan. Estrogens, oral contraceptives, and some cholesterol-lowering medicines can affect bile cholesterol and may influence treatment. Give the pharmacist a complete list of medicines, vitamins, and supplements. Patients should buy Actigall through a pharmacy able to check interactions and explain the dispensing label. The Actigall price should not override the need for clinical review of biliary symptoms.
Gallstone disease needs ongoing clinical judgment. The location, number, composition, and size of stones, gallbladder function, frequency of symptoms, and surgical risk all affect whether medical dissolution is realistic. Ursodiol is not a substitute for urgent evaluation of acute cholecystitis, obstructive jaundice, pancreatitis, or cholangitis. Do not begin a rapid-weight-loss program or use weight-loss products without discussing the plan with a healthcare professional, particularly if gallstones or liver disease are already present.
For a dissolution plan, taking each dose consistently is important, but extra capsules do not speed the result. Continue imaging and office visits as scheduled so the prescriber can confirm whether stones are responding and whether another strategy is required. If the prescriber recommends surgery or another intervention, do not continue to rely on a former prescription instead. Ask the clinician how long therapy is expected to continue and what symptoms should prompt same-day care.
Keep an updated list of medicines because new medicines can change the treatment plan. Tell all treating clinicians that ursodiol is being taken, especially before planned procedures or if hospital care is needed. Store the medication according to the dispensing label, do not share it, and use a pharmacist as the first point of contact for a damaged container, uncertainty about a missed dose, or a product that looks different from the prescribed capsule.
