Generic Benemid ( Probenecid )
Benemid (Probenecid) Tablets: Uses, Dosage, Safety and Interactions
Benemid is a prescription medicine containing probenecid. It is a uricosuric medicine that increases the removal of uric acid through the kidneys. It may be used for chronic hyperuricemia associated with gout and gouty arthritis when selected by a clinician. Probenecid has also been used in specific circumstances to increase blood concentrations of certain penicillin-type antibiotics, but that use requires a prescriber-directed regimen.
Benemid is not a rescue treatment for a sudden acute gout attack and may worsen symptoms if started during an active attack. Gout management also involves diagnostic confirmation, review of kidney function, hydration, dietary factors, other medicines, flare prevention, and monitoring of serum urate. Do not start, interrupt, or change a urate-lowering plan because of a painful joint without advice from the clinician managing the condition.
A patient with a valid prescription may buy Benemid through an appropriately regulated pharmacy. Benemid price varies with quantity, manufacturer, pharmacy, and insurance coverage. Cost concerns should be discussed professionally; they are not a reason to divide doses differently, discontinue treatment, or use a medicine supplied for someone else.
Indications
Benemid may be prescribed to reduce elevated uric acid in people with gout or gouty arthritis. By promoting urinary uric acid excretion, it can help lower serum urate over time. The medicine does not directly relieve the pain or inflammation of an acute gout flare. In some cases, clinicians use anti-inflammatory flare prophylaxis while urate-lowering treatment is being initiated or adjusted.
The medicine should not be used in people with uric acid kidney stones and is not generally started during an acute gout attack. Tell the prescriber about kidney disease, previous stones, blood disorders, stomach ulcers, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and allergies. Children under two years of age should not receive probenecid. Diagnosis and ongoing treatment should be supervised with appropriate laboratory monitoring.
Dosage
Take Benemid exactly as prescribed. Dosing for gout is individualized and may be started at a lower amount before titration based on serum urate, tolerance, kidney function, and clinical response. The medicine is often taken with food if stomach upset occurs. Drink sufficient fluids as directed by the clinician to reduce the risk of uric acid stone formation; the exact fluid goal should account for heart or kidney conditions.
Benemid tablets are commonly supplied as 500 mg tablets. Patients with a valid prescription may buy Benemid 500 mg when that is the strength and schedule prescribed. Patients with a valid prescription may buy Benemid 500 mg only for their own clinician-directed regimen. Do not take an extra tablet after a high-purine meal or during a flare. Benemid price should not influence tablet strength, treatment duration, or monitoring decisions.
If a dose is missed, take it when remembered unless it is nearly time for the next dose; then skip the missed dose. Do not double doses. Contact the prescriber or pharmacist if repeated doses are missed or if you are unsure how to resume treatment. Patients who buy Benemid with a valid prescription should store tablets in the original container, away from moisture and out of reach of children and pets.
Safety Information
Do not use Benemid if you have had a serious hypersensitivity reaction to probenecid or if you have known uric acid kidney stones. Adequate hydration is important because urinary uric acid can contribute to stone formation. Seek prompt medical advice for severe pain in the side or lower back, painful urination, blood in urine, cloudy urine, reduced urine output, persistent nausea or vomiting, or swelling. These may signal a stone, kidney problem, or another serious condition.
Possible adverse effects include nausea, vomiting, reduced appetite, headache, dizziness, rash, and worsening gout symptoms, particularly when treatment begins. Seek urgent care for hives, facial or throat swelling, difficulty breathing, blistering or peeling skin, fever with rash, unusual bruising, pale skin, severe weakness, jaundice, or dark urine. A clinician may need to monitor blood counts and kidney function in selected patients.
Do not obtain Benemid without a valid prescription and clinical oversight. In pregnancy or breastfeeding, treatment requires an individualized discussion of benefit and risk. Contact the care team before elective surgery, serious illness, or changes in fluid intake, because these circumstances can alter kidney function and gout management.
Interactions
Probenecid can substantially alter the kidney handling of other medicines. It may increase exposure to methotrexate and certain nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, creating clinically important toxicity risks. It can also affect some antibiotics and other medicines eliminated through renal tubular secretion. Aspirin and other salicylates can reduce its uricosuric effect, so the prescriber should review any regular or occasional use.
Tell the clinician about anticoagulants, diabetes medicines, antibiotics, methotrexate, NSAIDs, benzodiazepines such as lorazepam, supplements, and over-the-counter pain relievers. Do not begin or stop any of these medicines without professional advice. Benemid price should never be used to choose an alternative product or to bypass an interaction check; a pharmacist can review the full medicine list.
