Generic Aciclovir
Aciclovir: Uses, Dosage, Safety, and Prescription Information
Aciclovir, also called acyclovir, is a prescription antiviral medicine active against herpes viruses. Oral formulations are used for selected herpes simplex and varicella-zoster infections, including genital herpes, shingles, and chickenpox in appropriate patients. It limits viral replication but does not eradicate herpes viruses or guarantee that outbreaks will not recur. The intended indication, timing, immune status, kidney function, and formulation must be assessed by a clinician.
An Aciclovir price can vary by strength, dosage form, treatment duration, pharmacy, and insurance coverage. Patients may buy Aciclovir only with a valid prescription from a licensed pharmacy. An Aciclovir price is not a reason to use a leftover course, substitute a topical product for oral treatment, or delay clinical care for severe symptoms.
Indications
Oral aciclovir may be prescribed for initial or recurrent genital herpes, suppressive therapy in selected patients, herpes zoster, or chickenpox. Treatment works best when started according to the prescriber’s instructions, often early in the illness. Genital herpes can be transmitted even when lesions are absent. Aciclovir is not a substitute for safer-sex practices, disclosure, or evaluation of partners. Shingles involving the eye, a widespread rash, severe headache, weakness, or an immunocompromised patient requires prompt medical evaluation.
Patients who have been evaluated can obtain Aciclovir from a regulated pharmacy. The Aciclovir price may differ between strengths, yet the prescribed course and timing should remain unchanged. Do not share medicine or use it for cold sores, genital lesions, or a rash that has not been diagnosed.
Dosage
Dosing depends on the infection, age, weight in children, immune status, kidney function, and product. Oral tablets commonly include 200 mg, 400 mg, and 800 mg strengths. Labeling uses different schedules for shingles, initial genital herpes, recurrent episodes, suppression, and chickenpox; these schedules are not interchangeable. Drink adequate fluids unless a clinician has instructed fluid restriction, because hydration is important for kidney safety.
Patients with a valid prescription can buy Aciclovir 200 mg when that strength matches the prescribed regimen. Patients with a valid prescription can buy Aciclovir 400 mg when that strength matches the prescribed regimen. Patients with a valid prescription can buy Aciclovir 800 mg only when it matches the prescribed regimen. Take doses at evenly spaced intervals as directed. If a dose is missed, take it when remembered unless it is near the next dose; do not double doses.
Complete the prescribed course and contact the prescriber if symptoms worsen, new lesions develop, or hydration is difficult. Before patients buy Aciclovir for a later episode, they should have explicit refill directions from the clinician rather than assuming the former regimen applies.
Safety Information
Do not use aciclovir in people with known hypersensitivity to aciclovir, valacyclovir, or a product component. Kidney injury, including renal failure, has occurred, especially with dehydration, older age, pre-existing kidney disease, high doses, or concomitant nephrotoxic medicines. Dose adjustment may be required in renal impairment. Tell the prescriber about kidney disease, neurologic conditions, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and all medicines.
Possible effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, headache, and fatigue. Confusion, hallucinations, agitation, tremor, seizures, or marked drowsiness can signal serious toxicity, particularly in people with impaired kidney function. Seek urgent care for reduced urine output, severe rash or blistering, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, severe confusion, seizure, or unusual bruising or bleeding. Immunocompromised patients require particular monitoring because serious blood and kidney complications have been reported.
Interactions
Probenecid can increase aciclovir exposure. Other medicines that affect the kidneys, including certain anti-inflammatory medicines, immunosuppressants, and antivirals, may require clinical review. Tell the pharmacist about tenofovir, tacrolimus, cyclosporine, and any medicines that can affect renal function. The pharmacy should check the full medicine list before dispensing. The Aciclovir price is less important than correct kidney-adjusted dosing, hydration advice, and follow-up.
Herpes infections vary widely. A first episode of genital lesions, lesions near an eye, a painful spreading rash, fever with severe headache, or symptoms in a newborn should be assessed urgently. People with weakened immune systems may need a different route, dose, or monitoring plan than an otherwise healthy adult. Inform the clinician if immune-suppressing treatment, cancer therapy, transplantation, or HIV infection is present. Aciclovir should be used for the diagnosed condition and reviewed if the expected response does not occur.
Supportive care still matters. Keep affected areas clean and dry, avoid touching lesions, wash hands after applying topical products, and avoid contact that could transmit infection while active lesions are present. Do not apply oral tablets to the skin or use an eye product without explicit instructions. A pharmacist can explain the difference between tablets, capsules, suspension, cream, ointment, and other dosage forms. Maintain adequate hydration unless another clinician has restricted fluids, and ask for medical advice when vomiting or diarrhea prevents normal intake.
Tell the clinician promptly about any new neurologic symptom, especially in an older adult or a person with reduced kidney function. Confusion, altered speech, loss of coordination, or an unusual change in alertness should not be assumed to be part of the viral illness. Keep all medicines in the original labeled container, check the expiry date, and keep them away from children and pets. Do not dispose of unused tablets by sharing them; ask the pharmacist about local disposal options.
