Generic Provera ( Medroxyprogesterone Acetate )
Provera (Medroxyprogesterone Acetate) Tablets: Uses, Dosage, Safety and Interactions
Provera is a prescription progestin containing medroxyprogesterone acetate. It is used for selected hormone-related conditions, including secondary amenorrhea and abnormal uterine bleeding due to hormonal imbalance when organic causes such as fibroids or uterine cancer have been excluded. It may also be used with estrogen in certain postmenopausal regimens to reduce the risk of endometrial hyperplasia. This tablet product is not the same as injectable depot medroxyprogesterone products.
Abnormal vaginal bleeding requires medical evaluation before hormone treatment begins. Pregnancy, miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, infection, fibroids, cancer, thyroid disease, and other conditions can cause bleeding or missed periods. Provera is not a contraceptive and should not be used to self-treat pregnancy symptoms or unexplained bleeding.
Patients with a valid prescription may buy Provera through an appropriately regulated pharmacy. The Provera price can vary by strength, quantity, pharmacy, manufacturer, and insurance cover. Cost should not lead to unsupervised changes in cycle-day timing, dose, or treatment duration.
Indications
Provera tablets are indicated for secondary amenorrhea, abnormal uterine bleeding caused by hormonal imbalance in the absence of organic pathology, and reduction of endometrial hyperplasia in postmenopausal women receiving estrogen therapy when clinically appropriate. The diagnosis and exact regimen should be selected by a clinician after relevant examination and testing.
It is not indicated as a routine treatment for heavy bleeding due to cancer or fibroids without specialist evaluation. It should not be used during pregnancy. Tell the prescriber about any history of breast or genital cancer, blood clots, stroke, heart disease, liver disease, depression, migraine, diabetes, kidney disease, lupus, or unexplained bleeding.
Dosage
Take Provera exactly as prescribed. Regimens are condition-specific and may be scheduled for particular days of a menstrual cycle or for a defined number of days each month. Do not copy a regimen intended for another indication. The response to treatment and any unexpected bleeding should be reviewed rather than managed by taking additional tablets.
Provera tablets are commonly available in 5 mg and 10 mg strengths. Patients with a valid prescription may buy Provera 5 mg when that strength matches the prescribed regimen. Patients with a valid prescription may buy Provera 10 mg only as directed by the prescriber. The Provera price of a different strength does not make it interchangeable. If a dose is missed, follow the clinician’s or pharmacist’s advice and do not double the next dose.
Safety Information
Do not use Provera if you have a serious allergy to medroxyprogesterone acetate or an ingredient in the product, known or suspected pregnancy, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, active liver disease, known or suspected hormone-dependent cancer, or a history of thromboembolic disease when contraindicated by the prescriber. Pregnancy testing may be needed before treatment.
Possible effects include headache, dizziness, nausea, abdominal pain, breast tenderness, fatigue, mood changes, sleep changes, spotting, irregular bleeding, or weight changes. Seek urgent care for chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing blood, a painful swollen leg, sudden severe headache, weakness or numbness on one side, speech or vision changes, jaundice, severe depression, facial swelling, or breathing difficulty.
Smoking can increase cardiovascular risk in people using hormonal treatment. Patients using Provera with a valid prescription should use it only for the person and indication on the label. Breast screening, pelvic assessment, blood pressure monitoring, and follow-up may be appropriate based on individual risks.
Interactions
Aminoglutethimide and some medicines that induce liver enzymes can reduce medroxyprogesterone concentrations and may reduce treatment effect. Tell the clinician about all prescription medicines, nonprescription products, vitamins, and herbal remedies. Particular care is needed with medicines that affect clotting, glucose control, or liver metabolism.
The Provera price is not a measure of safety or suitability. A pharmacist should review new medicines before they are added, and patients should buy Provera only with a valid prescription and appropriate clinical oversight.
Medical disclaimer: This content is informational and does not replace advice, diagnosis, or treatment from a licensed healthcare professional. Provera is a prescription medicine, and patients should follow their prescriber’s directions and seek professional advice for questions about their treatment.
